I was penniless and desperate after quitting my previous job 💦 I planned my independence!
*This is a copy of what was updated on the previous site.
In April 2017, I (Tokunaga Naotaka) left my previous job at Flathead Co., Ltd. , and Junichi Harayama joined me to become an independent leather craftsman.
And so we launched Groover Leather!

👆Right after I became independent, I rented the second floor of my parents' house in Shinonoi (^-^;
So I really didn't have any money at that time.
During my time at Flathead, I worked in the leather department at Stockburg, where I was responsible for managing and developing most of Flathead's accessories, but once I left that position, I was just an ordinary person!
At that time, I was desperately telling myself this.
As for my personal work at that time,
・Product manufacturing craftsmen
・Work on the structure and design of new products
- OEM production and sales, general design, etc. - Management of the website, SNS, etc. <br data-mce-fragment="1">And many other things.
Outside of work, I used to like all kinds of sports, but now I don't do any of them (;'∀')
For example, skateboarding and snowboarding are in their 20s.
I want to go bass fishing, carp fishing, and sea fishing whenever I have the time!
I want to start riding a bike seriously soon!
The band was getting serious too... but maybe there's nothing else to do?
I try my hand at a lot of things but I don't really get into it. (;'∀') I've tried a lot of different things and I have a lot of experience! Let's just say that (laughs)
What was your previous job?
・On-site agent → Get into a fight and quit (lame!)
・Truck mechanic → I quit for some reason (;'∀') I kinda regret it 💦
・Site manager → Met Junichi Harayama・Furniture craftsman → Started leather work as a hobby at the same time. Do you still want to make furniture?
・American casual apparel manufacturer (FH) → Leather department within the brand
I'm quitting my job quite often (laughs).
I thought I would have to work most of my life, so I decided to settle down by the time I was 27, and when I realized this company wasn't for me, I quit right away .
Many people
I want to find a job that suits me in life!
・I think you might be thinking something like, "I'll just do my job and enjoy my free time ."
Even though I changed jobs many times, the one I decided to dedicate my life to was working at a leather workshop (Stockberg) belonging to an American casual brand.
The year after I joined the company, I worked on an event (Super Weekend) at M Wave at the Nagano Olympic venue, and the stimulation I got there still forms the basis of my work today.
Actually, there were a few things going on... so I left work (;'∀')
(Another fight? No, the other guy was too big for that (-_-;))
As a result, we both left the company with no savings. It was really tough at first (~_~;)
This is a long story, so I'll talk about it when I feel like it.
First, on the second floor of my parents' house
I suddenly quit my job so I'm extremely poor!
Normally, I would have to make a lot of plans before quitting, but I had a lot going on and I had to ask my parents for help without any savings (;'∀')
Even though we had the technology to make things, starting a business was a whole different world, so I realized that I didn't have enough skills to be a manager and was only a craftsman , so I called people I could rely on and asked them to lend me their help.
Of course, both Harayama and I have families and children, so we couldn't allow ourselves to fail, and in the beginning I strongly felt that "It all starts with one person trying their best!" If I don't do it, then who else is going to?
That's why I told Harayama , "Be prepared to sip muddy water for the first year," but we had to turn our products into money at the beginning, so we spent that whole year running around desperately setting up stalls at craft fairs and selling to potential buyers.

The photo is from our first event in Karuizawa, where we had a store and the sales were 50,000 yen (^-^;
The next one and the next one were also fluctuating between 50,000 and 80,000.
Of course I had a part-time job too^^;
That's where it all began...
I will omit the rest.
On November 3, 2017, the first Gruber Leather store opened in Shinonoi, Nagano City.

In 2018, we opened an OEM specialty workshop in Togura Kamiyamada.

It will then relocate and reopen in Inariyama, Chikuma City in January 2021.

I plan to continue posting detailed updates on my activities from the craft fair on my blog in the future.
But all I can say now is
・Being independent without funds is dangerous! (Of course 😅)
- Make it clear who you are (so that others can trust you)
・Always cherish your connections with people!
That's about it😀
How many people have I relied on and how many people have helped me?
Give and take! I believe these words connect people together.
A craftsman's challenge!
Being serious will connect the dots!
We will continue to take on further challenges in the future.
