Many of Groover Leather's products solve this problem by using the "hem turning" technique!

A sustainable activity that turns deerskin from the wilds of Shinshu into works of art within the prefecture

Deerskin has been popular since ancient times. It has excellent water resistance, breathability and heat retention, and is so soft and supple that it is called the cashmere of leather.

We approach each piece with a sense of destiny to utilize these materials and circulate the economy.

▲Because it is a natural material, we will of course try to avoid large marks such as scars, wrinkles, blood vessels and stains, but we appreciate your understanding that we will accept and use it as proof of life.

▲The antique finish may appear uneven because it is a mixture of two colors, but it is a process that adds depth to a flat appearance and also makes it less susceptible to dirt.

How deerskin is made

The damage to crops caused by pests (deer, wild boar) nationwide reached 15.8 billion yen in fiscal year 2018 , and approximately 600,000 deer are exterminated as pests throughout the year. Of these, only 22% are used as gibier for meat. *As of fiscal year 2022, most gibier leather is produced by using it for food, so it is actually thrown away.
Nagano Prefecture is an area where damage caused by bird and animal attacks is high, but thanks to the efforts of local hunters and local governments, the number of exterminations is increasing year by year, and the damage is decreasing. We launched the "Shinshu Ethical Project" with the goal of helping the companies involved to develop economically and continue to operate.
"In order to ensure that the activities we have worked so hard to connect do not come to an end," our activities will continue.

▲Deer captured in Nagano City are processed at the Nagano City Game Processing Center and separated into meat, skin, etc.

▲The raw hides separated for use as skins are transported to Mersen Co., Ltd. in Iida City and tanned into leather.

*There are several other gibier processing facilities in the prefecture, but it is an extremely difficult task to actually process wild deer in a facility and bring them to a tannery like Merusen Co., Ltd. We are grateful to those who established this facility and it is our duty to continue it, and we need everyone's cooperation to do so!

Behind the products we purchase every day may be hidden factors that cause social problems such as deforestation and global warming.
Since most leather is imported from overseas by ship, actively using gibier deerskin can reduce the energy required for transportation. Local production for local consumption is "ethical consumption," and we believe that spreading gibier leather is environmentally friendly and can contribute to a sustainable effort that leads to economic revitalization.
